Model or Drawing Not Found

This guide explains the possible reasons and solutions for cases where, according to Vertex G4’s archive information, a model/drawing is in the archive, but attempting to open it results in a notification that the file cannot be found, or nothing happens when trying to open it.

Incorrect file management practices using File Explorer

There have been reported cases where someone has rearranged models/drawings located under the shared/picts or shared/projects folders using Windows File Explorer, moving them to desired locations such as subfolders they created under a project.
There are also cases where, using File Explorer, a file or an entire folder has been accidentally dragged and dropped from one location to another.
From Vertex G4’s perspective, these actions naturally result in the system no longer being able to locate the file based on the information in the archive.

Test if other files can be found

Try checking whether other models and drawings can be opened.

  • If they can, the archive databases are intact.

  • If only models or drawings can be found, the archive database may be corrupted.

Restoring the situation

  1. First check in the archive where the missing file should be located (shared/picts or shared/projects/project_ID).

  2. Then, using Windows File Explorer, search for the file with the expected name either in the Vertex G4 directory structure (e.g., D:\vertex\vxg4 or \\File_server\shared_folder\vxg4_srv) or in nearby folders.

  3. If the file is found, restore it to its correct location.

Backups

Interrupted save process

If you get the “File not found” error when reading a file, or if the file simply does not open:

  • Check in File Explorer if there is another file with the same name but with the extension .2. If found, rename it back to the original file name (without .2).

  • To minimize problems caused by possible network errors, the software first copies the old file to a new name (old name + .2). If saving succeeds, the .2 file is automatically deleted.

  • During saving, the program also stores a temporary file tmp.vxm in the user’s home directory (e.g., vxg4/user), which might still be there if the save process didn’t finish its second phase.

Automatic backups

The program saves backup files under vxg4/user/BACKUP. This is controlled via the keyword set.backup.on in the user/SETUP file.
If needed, such a backup file can be copied over the original model/drawing file using Windows File Explorer.

The user can also manually create a backup at any time:

  • Application Menu → Backup → Save Backup
    Backups can be opened with:

  • Application Menu → Backup → Open Backup

These workfileX.vxm files are stored in the home directory (e.g., vxg4/user).

If the above-mentioned automatic backup feature is enabled, these safe* and workfile* files can no longer be restored directly with the “Save as original archived file” option.
In such cases, they must be renamed (after verification) to the original file name and moved back to the original location manually via Windows.
