This guide explains the reasons and remedies for cases where, according to Vertex G4’s archive data, a model/drawing exists in the archive, but attempts to open it end with a message saying the file cannot be found, or nothing happens when trying to open it.

Incorrect use of Windows File Explorer

There have been reported cases where someone has reorganized models/drawings found under the shared/picts or shared/projects folders into locations of their own choosing using Windows File Explorer, e.g. into subfolders they created under a project.
There are also cases where, by mistake, a file or an entire folder has been dragged and dropped to a different location.
From the perspective of Vertex G4, this naturally leads to a situation where the file can no longer be found based on the archive data.

Testing if other files can be found

Try to check whether other models and drawings are available.

  • If they can be found, the archive databases are intact.

  • If only models or only drawings are found, the archive database may be corrupted.

Correcting the situation

First, check the archive to see where the missing file should be located (shared/picts or shared/projects/project_ID).
Then use Windows File Explorer to check whether such a file exists either in the expected Vertex G4 directory structure (e.g. D:\vertex\vxg4 or \\File_server\shared_folder\vxg4_srv) or in folders parallel to them.
If the file is found, restore it to the correct location.

Backups

Incomplete save process

This appears as an error message saying “File not found” when trying to read the file, or the file simply does not open.
Check with Windows File Explorer whether there is another model with the same name but with the suffix .2. If found, rename it back to the original name (without the .2 suffix).

To avoid issues caused by possible network errors, the program first copies the old file under a new name (= old name + suffix .2). If saving succeeds, the program automatically deletes the suffixed file.

Additionally, during saving the program writes a temporary file tmp.vxm to the user’s home directory (e.g. vxg4/user), which may still be found there if the program did not manage to complete the second stage of saving.

Autosaves

The program saves backup files under the folder vxg4/user/BACKUP. This is controlled by the keyword set.backup.on in the file user/SETUP.

If necessary, such a backup file can be restored over the original model/drawing file using Windows File Explorer.

The user can also make a manual backup at any time via:
Application menu => Backup => Save backup

These backups can be opened via:
Application menu => Backup => Open backup

These workfileX.vxm files are stored in the home directory (e.g. vxg4/user).

If the above-mentioned backup saving is enabled, the safe* and workfile* files can no longer be restored with the option “Save over the original archived file”. Instead, after verifying them, they must also be renamed manually with Windows and placed back in the original location.

Do you want me to format this into a ready-to-use support article style document (with headings, step lists, and maybe add screenshots placeholders), so you could drop it directly into documentation or a knowledge base?
