3. How to Add Equipment to Assembly

Exercise 3: How to add equipment to the assembly.

The main objective of this exercise is to add a vessel and a pump to your equipment model.

The estimated time to complete this exercise is 10 minutes.

Version compatibility

This exercise was carried out with version 27.0 (Vertex 2021).

In this exercise, you will learn to

  • How to use vxz packages.
  • How to add a vessel model from the archive to the assembly.
  • How to add a pump model from the library to the assembly.
  • How to set and use a local origin.
  • How to place a model to the assembly by using dimensions.

Functions in use

  • Context-sensitive function: Add > Model...
  • Context-sensitive function: Add > Component...
  • Rotate around the Z axis
  • Context-sensitive function: Snap > Set local origin (Q)
  • Dimensions
  • Context-sensitive function: Constraints > Fix
  • Save

Download the vessel model

  • Download the vessel model EXP-50-Ctank.vxz here. (319 KB)
  • Drag and drop the package EXP-50-Ctank.vxz from the folder to Vertex G4Plant's working window.
  • The program saves the vessel model to the EXP project's archive.
  • You can open the model after the transfer if you like.

Open the model of your main assembly

  • Open the model of your main assembly (EXP-MAIN.vxm) from the previous exercise.
  • Open the basic browser by pressing B and find the segment Documents.
  • The segment Documents divides into two main branches Model and Drawing.
  • Search the folder of your project from the branch Model. Then double-click it to open the model.
  • You can find more information about the browser here.

Edit the equipment model

  • Select the equipment model (EXP-EQ) from the assembly tree.
  • Context-sensitive function: Edit or double-click the sub-assembly from the assembly tree.
  • You are now at the editing state of the equipment model. You can see the symbols of other assemblies as unsharp in the tree. The symbol of the model you are editing is sharp in the tree.

Add the vessel model from the archive to the equipment model

  • Context-sensitive function: Add Model...
  • The folder Model > Search the project folder EXP
  • File EXP-50-Ctank > Double-click or drag & drop.
  • Rotate the model once 90 degrees around the z-axis, in picture 1).
  • Move the cursor to the assembly's origin > Context-sensitive function: Snap Set Local Origin (Q), in picture 2).
  • You have now set a local origin to that selected point. Next, you will move the vessel in the assembly from this point.
  • Type the movement with the numbers from your keyboard, in picture 3). You will see the coordinate window when you start typing the numbers.
  • = 4450
  • Y = 10250
  • Z = 0
  • Then Enter.
  • Note! Do not lock the movement on the main axis before you start typing the numbers. If you do so, you can only define the movement in one direction.
  • Approve the location > Context-sensitive function: OK.
  • Close the browser or end the function with Esc.
  • The vessel model is the first model in this assembly. It will be automatically fixed. You can see a small lock symbol in the assembly tree.

  • Add the pump model from the component library to the equipment model

    • Context-sensitive function: Add > Component...
    • Select the folder Plant > Devices > Pumps.
    • Select the component Vertical-Pump.
    • Select the size KSB-Etanorm-080-065-315 > OK.
    • Rotate the model twice 90 degrees around the z-axis, in picture 1).
    • Move the cursor to the assembly's origin > Context-sensitive function: Snap Set Local Origin (Q), in picture 2).
    • You have now set a local origin to that selected point. Next, you will move the pump in the assembly from this point.
    • Type the movement with the numbers from your keyboard, in picture 3).
    • = 1500
    • Y = 1950
    • Z = 0
    • Then Enter.
  • Approve the location > Context-sensitive function: OK.
  • Close the browser or end the function with Esc.
  • Select the pump from the model or tree:
    • Context-sensitive function: Constraints > Fix.
    • Select the pump from the model or tree:
      • Context-sensitive function: Item Data... > Tab Pipe Data > Type a text PU-001 to the field Line position > Close the window Item data by clicking the OK button.
      • The connecting pipeline will show the position PU-001 in the isometric drawing.

    Save the model

    • Return to the main assembly level on the model > Working window > Right mouse button > OK. This action will save the changes of the sub-assembly to the archive.

    • Save the main assembly also: File > Save or click
      or from your keyboard
      +
      .

You can download here the result of exercise 3 (EXP-EQ.vxz). (651 KB)

This transfer package will create a project EXP and insert the models EXP-EQ and EXP-50-Ctank into the archive.

We don't recommend using this package if you already conducted the exercise by using the same labels for the project and models as guided.
